Beauregard's capture is depicted in muted, almost monochromatic tones to indicate the somber, unhappiness of the rooster. He clearly is a prisoner, albeit loved, by the young woman clutching him. The painting is done on gessoed paper in transparent watercolor. Beauregard, the focal point and star, is the most brilliant part of the painting. His captor is solemn and has the air of one much older than her years, as would be the case for the time period.
