These gladiolas represent a careful study of the flower with an artistic twist. The paper, having been gessoed, gives a totally different character to the watercolour medium. The paint pools in crevices and hollows giving an abstract quality to the work that is impossible to achieve otherwise. The vibrant colour and sharp outlines contrast with this look that make the study much more interesting.
